Throat cancer, which last month claimed the life of Sammy Davis Jr. and the speech of recently released hostage Robert Polhill, is an avoidable tragedy. Surgeons say most of its victims smoke and/or drink. And those who suffer most have usually ignored early signs of the disease.
The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be 12,300 new cases of cancer of the larynx in the United States this year - 10,000 in men and 2,300 in women.
