A group of prominent Liberal Party members has split with Prime Minister JOHN HOWARDover his despatch of Australian troops to the Middle East for a possible war against Iraq.

The group, which includes former federal and New South Wales Liberal Party president,JOHN VALDER, plans to mount a national advertising campaign on the issue.

Mr VALDER says opposition to any invasion of Iraq exist across Australia's political spectrum.

He says he hopes the federal government will listen to the majority of Australiansand not just to the President of the United States, GEORGE W BUSH.

The group calls itself Liberals Against War.
